India vs Pakistan, 6th Match, Group A

India vs Pakistan, 6th Match, Group A – Live Cricket

The first request was not a question at all.

“Ryan, can you come closer to the mic please?”

Ryan ten Doeschate leaned in, shifting slightly under the glare of a press room fuller and noisier than usual. The assistant coach of India’s cricket team, a former allrounder from the Netherlands better known for his cricket than for grand pronouncements, must have known this press conference would not be about combinations and tactics.

On the eve of India’s Asia Cup clash with Pakistan, he was confronted with questions that swirled far beyond the boundary rope: Would players be carrying the sentiments of the public back home? Had India prepared differently for Pakistan? How was this match different from other India-Pakistan games?

The answers hardly mattered. What mattered was the reminder that India vs Pakistan is never just about cricket.

Ten doeschate said what he could. Yes, the players felt compassion, but they would put it aside. No, preparations had not been any different. No illusions about being favourites either.

That was enough to capture the essence: this contest pulls everyone in. Players, coaches, administrators, governments, and in this case, even a city like Dubai at the peak of its summer. Whether the cricket in the middle can match that intensity, though, is not a guarantee.

India are a far stronger side at the moment: across formats, across conditions. Especially in T20Is, where they have finally committed to batting freely and going hard at any cost. Pakistan, under Mike Hesson, are trying to head in that direction, but the gulf could still show. That said, two of Pakistan’s three wins against India in T20Is have come in Dubai.

Pakistan arrive after winning a tri-series, though they lived dangerously at times, scraping through tight finishes and even needing a hat-trick in the final to save a modest target. Their Asia Cup opener against Oman was more straightforward, but questions linger around their batting. India, meanwhile, warmed up by steamrolling UAE, their top order finding rhythm and their spinners looking in sync. With Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy in the lineup, they have options to match Mohammad Nawaz, whom Hesson recently called the “best spinner in the world.”

For ten Doeschate, a buzzing press room was enough to feel the weight of the rivalry. For the players, that weight will arrive in full under the floodlights: the noise, the pressure and the knowledge that every delivery in an India-Pakistan game starts well before it leaves the bowler’s hand.

When: Sunday, September 14, 2025 at 6:30 PM local time / 8:00 PM IST

Where: Dubai International Stadium

What to expect: One of the center pitches on the square is being readied for this match. The pitch, as Shivam Dube reckoned after the UAE match, could again be on the slower side, with spinners expected to have more say as the tournament wears on. It’s supposed to be a kinder day heat wise, with high temperatures of 39 degrees expected. Dew could still be a factor later in the night, so expect the captain winning the toss to chase.

Team news

India: Ryan ten Doeschate reckoned that India didn’t gain “too much information” from their first Asia Cup outing but seemed to suggest that the combinations are likely to stick. That could mean Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube in the middle-order once nire, no Arshdeep Singh, and more game time together for Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy.

Injuries/unavailability: Shubman Gill was hit in the nets during the optional session on match eve but the Indian vice-captain resumed his batting after a brief timeout and looked alright.

Tactics & matchups: Sanju Samson in the middle order hasn’t quite worked before. In T20Is since 2021, Samson has averaged 24 and struck at 139 when batting No.4 or below. His corresponding numbers while batting in the top-three are roughly 37 and 148 respectively.

Probable XI: Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav(c), Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson(w), Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy

Pakistan: Salman Agha’s side is also likely to go in unchanged after their convincing victory in the opening match.

Injuries/unavailability: The entire squad is available to pick from.

Tactics & matchups: Mohammad Nawaz, who was the Player of the Series in each of Pakistan’s last two T20I series wins, will be key with the ball. He has averaged under 15 and conceded at under seven an over in each of the four series he’s featured in, in 2025.

Probable XI: Saim Ayub, Sahibzada Farhan, Mohammad Haris(w), Fakhar Zaman, Salman Agha(c), Hasan Nawaz, Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, Shaheen Afridi, Sufiyan Muqeem, Abrar Ahmed

Did you know?

– Since July 2024, India’s batters have the best strike-rate, average, boundary% and balls/six against spin among players of Full Member nations

– Since last year’s T20 World Cup, Shaheen Afridi has averaged over 51 with the ball inside the powerplay

– Mohammad Nawaz was Player of the Series in each of Pakistan’s last two T20I series wins

What they said:

“We’re aware of people’s feelings, at the same time we’ve got to go out, and the guys get a chance to play for their country, and they’ll be as professional and focused as they can be given the circumstance.” – Ryan ten Doeschate

“We are not just looking forward to the Pakistan-India match, but we are looking forward to winning the tournament.” – Saim Ayub

PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi distances himself from Babar, Rizwan omission from Asia Cup 2025 squad

Pakistan’s selection committee stunned everyone by excluding former skipper Babar Azam and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan from the team’s 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup.

On this matter, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi clarified that he was not involved in the decision-making and fully supports merit-based selection.

Both Azam and Rizwan have been asked to improve their strike rate in the T20 format, as revealed by head coach Mike Hesson and chief selector Aqib Javed during the squad announcement.

According to the Times of India, while speaking to local reporters, Naqvi explained that a group of selectors and an advisory committee are solely responsible for team selection.

“First of all, I don’t have even 1 per cent role in putting players into the team or taking them out,” he said. “We have a selection committee and then an advisory body; they all sit together. The process goes through a lot — discussions that last 8–10 hours, sometimes for 2–3 days.”

Naqvi also emphasised the professionalism maintained in the process. “Definitely, if a team is being selected, it’s in good hands; all professionals are there. I’ve only told them one thing — whatever decision they take, it should be on merit, and I will support that,” he added.

Pakistan will play their first Asia Cup 2025 match against Oman on September 12, with Salman Ali Agha leading the team. Pakistan and Oman are placed in Group A alongside India and the United Arab Emirates.

Virat Kohli returns to nets in London ahead of Australia ODIs

Virat Kohli has returned to the practice nets in London ahead of India’s next ODI assignment — a three-match series in Australia, scheduled from 19 to 25 October. The former India captain shared a picture on his Instagram story on Friday from a training session alongside Gujarat Titans’ assistant coach Naeem Amin.

In the picture, Kohli is seen sporting a salt-and-pepper look, wearing a grey T-shirt and blue trousers. The caption read: “Thanks for helping out with the hit, brother. Always lovely to see you.”

Kohli’s ODI comeback was delayed after the series against Bangladesh, initially scheduled for August, was postponed. He last featured during India’s Test tour of Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the beginning of the year, where he scored 190 runs at an average of 23.75.

The talismanic batter made headlines when he announced his retirement from Test cricket in June, shortly after leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to their maiden IPL title. Since then, he has been out of action. While the England-India Test series was going on, Kohli was seen spending time with his family — attending Wimbledon with his wife, Anushka Sharma, and appearing at a charity event hosted by former cricketer Yuvraj Singh.

In ODI cricket, Kohli has amassed 14,181 runs at an average of 57.88, including 51 centuries and 74 half-centuries. In the last World Cup, he scored 765 runs and broke Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record for the most ODI centuries.

Injuries in cricket and spot, and the never-say-die spirit

Ashok Namboodiri

Much has been written about the famous win that India pulled off in the last Test of the recent Andersen-Tendulkar series. Many more write-ups are still in the making. And for very good reason.

The cricket eco-system has been transformed with the advent of data analytics, high flying strategies and scientific management of workload. The one thing that remains intact though are the moments of raw, unfiltered courage when a cricketer turns up bloodied and bruised to do duty in an arm sling, bone cast or sometimes the jaw strapped in a bandage. The recent India-England series saw two such moments — one of course was Chris Woakes walking out to join Gus Atkinson at the end of the innings. Ironically, it was in the Manchester Test before that when Rishabh Pant walked out with an injured toe to score a gritty 54 off 75 balls; an injury inflicted by the same Woakes.

Woakes, in visible discomfort, wasn’t going to let a sling deny him the chance to stand with his team. It didn’t matter that his presence didn’t change the result. What mattered was that it changed the mood — from resignation to resistance.

An iconic moment in my head was in 1984 when Malcom Marshall came on to bowl with an injured thumb in the Test against England and went on to take nine wickets, generating the same swing and menace that emanated from fury rather than fitness. It’s an immortal reminder that some players are just wired differently.

Ravi Shastri commentating on Woakes coming out to bat talked about Colin Cowdrey coming out to bat at No. 11 in the 1974 Waca Test at Perth against a menacing Australian attack led by Jeff Thomson, arm in a sling. He was 41 then and has alredy established his credentials; he didn’t score a single run. But he made a point: honour isn’t just about glory; sometimes, it’s about presence.

Yet another image that is now part of cricketing folklore… Anil Kumble playing in the Antigua Test in 2002 had his jaw fractured by a bouncer from Merv Dillon. He came out to bowl 14 overs, jaw strapped in a white bandage and scalped the mighty Brian Lara. “At least I could get one wicket for my country,” he later said. That wasn’t just a line — it was a creed.

Northeast India to Kolkata: Durand Cup Ignites Football Fever, Draws Record Crowds

With matches being held in multiple cities, the tournament has ignited an electrifying atmosphere, drawing record crowds and showcasing the unifying power of the game.

NorthEast Derby Electrifies Shillong

In a thrilling North East derby, defending champions North East United FC secured their place in the quarterfinals with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Shillong Lajong FC. While Alaaeddine Ajaraie’s double strike sealed the win, the real story was the packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. A roaring crowd of 13,900 fans created an electric atmosphere, a testament to the region’s love for football. With six points from two matches, the Highlanders now need just a point from their final group stage game to qualify as group winners.

From Imphal to Kokrajhar: The North-East’s Passion Shines

The tournament’s return to Manipur, a state healing from a period of unrest, has been met with an outpouring of support. The opening match at the Khuman Lampak Stadium between local giants –  NEROCA FC and TRAU FC – was a poignant sight, with thousands of fans and students filling the stands, celebrating both football and a return to normalcy.

AUS vs SA: Head and Marsh to Form Opening Partnership for the First Time, Set to Continue Long Term

Australia’s T20I skipper Mitchell Marsh has confirmed that he and Travis Head will form the team’s opening partnership heading into next year’s T20 World Cup. With the tournament scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka, Australia is working on locking in their best XI, and the top-order slot now seems settled.

After David Warner’s retirement, the selectors have experimented with various options at the top, including Matthew Short, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and more recently Glenn Maxwell. However, it’s now clear that Marsh and Head will be given the responsibility of opening the innings.

The duo will debut as an opening pair in the T20I format during the upcoming three-match series against South Africa, part of a six-match white-ball tour hosted by Australia.

Marsh confirms Australia’s opening pair

“For now, Heady and I will be opening,” Marsh said ahead of the series opener in Darwin on Sunday, 10 August. “We’ve played a lot of cricket together, have a strong partnership, and it makes sense to start with that.”

While this will be their first time opening together in T20Is, Head and Marsh have already shown strong chemistry at the top in ODIs, putting together 282 runs in five innings at an average of 70.50. Overall, their partnerships across formats have yielded 504 runs from 14 innings, including one century stand and three fifties.

Given their track record in 50-over cricket, the Head-Marsh pair is expected to give fruitful results.

Australia’s T20I squad vs South Africa:

Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa.
